Chapter 8

* * *

After getting some much-needed rest, Belle was up around five a.m. and writing a to-do list for Val and Anne. After all, someone needed to prepare for that night’s showing of The Gorgon. Many patrons from the previous evening were planning on coming back to see the film.

After a few minor touch-ups, she threw her backpack over her shoulder, headed outside to her car, and got on the road to New Orleans. Without her sister in the car to micromanage her driving, Belle was able to go slightly over the speed limit and arrive in the French Quarter in less than two hours.

Quickly finding a parking spot before the day’s usual rush of traffic, she got out of her car to walk the streets toward her destination. The smells of a Creole breakfast wafted up from outdoor eateries nearby and Belle realized just how hungry she was. Cursing herself for not packing some snacks, a poor oversight on her part, she navigated her way into a nearby café.

Stylish wood counters with metal stools as seating bordered the walls of the room and hanging lamps illuminated the place with a soft glow. The scents of fresh bread and sweets, mingled with ground coffee, were inviting elements that drew Belle further inside. Smooth jazz echoed over the speaker system, giving the whole place a calming vibe.

The normal morning crowd was all there, getting their fill of coffee, fresh pastries, and even a Louisiana twist on the eggs benedict with Cajun spices and andouille sausage. Belle made a mental note of it for the restaurant, wondering if anyone would order it during dinner.

Belle, wanting to get about her investigative process quickly, settled on a steaming chocolate and almond croissant which had just come out of the oven. As a morning pick-me-up, she ordered a cup of roasted Haitian coffee to go with it.

“Anything else for you, Ma’am?” the handsome looking barista, who had way too many muscles for his profession, asked.

“Actually, I was wondering if you could direct me to Madame Medusa’s House of Wax.”

“Sure, I can, but I don’t think it will do you much good.”

“Why not?”

“That place is out of business.”

Belle’s jaw dropped. “You’re kidding.”

“Wish I was. I loved going to that place when I was a kid, you know.”

She had a hard time imaging him as a kid. “Well, when did it go out?”

“Last month. It was a real shame. The lady who ran the place just got too old, I guess, and decided to close shop. I wish she would have passed it on to someone else, but I guess there was no one she trusted to keep it up to her standards.”

“I understand that,” Belle agreed.

“She was always afraid of it turning into a seedy, run-down thing, and I can’t blame her. A lot of places that used to be neat end up being more creepy than classy.”

Belle stuck her lower lip out for effect. “Well, I’m disappointed that I missed it.”

“Yeah, it’s a real shame.
